Gets spring invite from Philly
Sat, Jan 18, 2025, 12:55 AM
Aoyagi signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Friday and was invited to spring training, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: The 31-year-old right-hander was posted by the NPB's Hanshin Tigers in December after he logged a 3.00 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 114 innings last season in Japan. He'll attempt to land a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, but he may have to begin his North American career with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Sent to Philly
Sat, Jan 18, 2025, 12:05 AM
The Dodgers traded Campbell to the Phillies on Friday in exchange for international bonus pool space, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Campbell spent all of last season at High-A Great Lakes, slashing .251/.331/.372 with 10 home runs, 53 RBI and 42 stolen bases over 115 games. It's likely the 22-year-old outfielder remains in High-A upon joining his new organization, though a mid-season promotion to Double-A Reading is possible.
McKinley Moore
McKinley Moore Designated for assignment
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 4:45 PM
The Phillies designated Moore for assignment Wednesday.
Analysis: Moore will lose his spot on Philadelphia's 40-man roster as a result of Spencer Turnbull officially signing with the club Wednesday. Moore appeared in three games for the Phillies last season, surrendering seven earned runs in 3.1 innings while striking out two batters and walking five. He found consistent success in the minor leagues, however, making it possible another team gives him a look off the waiver wire.
Simon Muzziotti
Simon Muzziotti Outrighted to Triple-A
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 5:09 PM
Muzziotti cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
Analysis: Muzziotti passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment by Philadelphia last week, so he'll remain in the organization. The 25-year-old received his first taste of the big leagues last season and went 1-for-7 in nine games, though he spent most of the campaign at Lehigh Valley, where he had a .762 OPS in 524 plate appearances.
Andrew Bellatti
Andrew Bellatti Sent to Triple-A
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 5:07 PM
Bellati cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
Analysis: The right-hander was designated for assignment by Philadelphia last week but will remain in the organization after he passed through waivers unclaimed. Bellati will still join the Phillies for big-league camp after he posted a 5.11 ERA over 24.2 innings last year.
Back with Philadelphia
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 5:05 PM
Buchanan signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Tuesday that includes an invite to major-league spring training.
Analysis: Buchanan had a 5.01 ERA in 35 starts for the Phillies between 2014 and 2015, but he's spent the past number of years playing overseas in Japan and Korea. The 34-year-old righty started 30 games for the Samsung Lions of the KBO last season and had a 2.54 ERA and 139:43 K:BB across 188 innings.
Diego Castillo
Diego Castillo DFA'd by Philly
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 4:58 PM
Castillo was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Tuesday.
Analysis: Castillo was claimed off waivers by Philly early last week but won't stick on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old spent last season at the Triple-A level and had an .841 OPS in 124 contests. Kaleb Ort, who was claimed off waivers from the Marlins, will take Castillo's place on the Phillies' roster.
Kaleb Ort

Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 4:56 PM
Ort was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 32-year-old was designated for assignment by the Marlins last week and will now join his fourth team of the offseason. Ort made 21 appearances for the Red Sox last season and had a 6.26 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB across 23 innings.
Spencer Turnbull
Spencer Turnbull Lands in Philadelphia
Sun, Feb 11, 2024, 2:35 PM
Turnbull agreed Sunday with the Phillies on a one-year, $2 million contract, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The contract includes up to $2 million in incentives.
Analysis: Turnbull was non-tendered by the Tigers earlier in the offseason following an ineffective, injury-plagued 2023 campaign, but he'll be added to the Phillies' 40-man roster and should have a chance to compete for a back-end spot in the team's Opening Day rotation. The 31-year-old still has a minor-league option remaining and will most likely begin the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley if he falls short in his bid for a rotation spot with Philadelphia, but an injury or two could quickly pave the way for him to surface with the big club. Turnbull should at least head into Phillies camp with a clean bill of health, and he has a decent overall track record at the big-league level to fall back on in spite of his struggles in 2023. Over 61 career appearances (60 starts) across 302.1 innings with the Tigers from 2018 through 2023, Turnbull logged a 4.55 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 12.3 K-BB%.
Brandon Marsh
Brandon Marsh Out up to four weeks after surgery
Fri, Feb 9, 2024, 10:21 AM
Marsh will be sidelined 3-4 weeks following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Phillies expect Marsh to be back in time for Opening Day, but he won't be working with much margin for error. It's a hit to the outfield depth of a Phillies team that was already pretty thin. Marsh is tentatively slated to be Philadelphia's left fielder, although he could slide back over to center field if the club decides Johan Rojas isn't ready.
Simon Muzziotti
Simon Muzziotti Designated for assignment
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:51 PM
Muzziotti was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Wednesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Muzziotti saw spot duty with the Phils in 2022 but spent all of 2023 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, slashing .296/.358/.404 with seven homers and 26 steals. The 25-year-old's power is lacking, but he can play a good center field and doesn't strike out much, so there could be interest in him on waivers.
Max Castillo
Max Castillo Claimed by Philadelphia
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:46 PM
The Phillies claimed Castillo off waivers from the Red Sox on Wednesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's the third organization Castillo has been in since early January, as he previously had gone from the Royals to the Red Sox via waivers. He'll compete for a swingman role in Philadelphia but does have an option year remaining.
Not expected until 2025
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 9:20 AM
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in an interview on 94 WIP in Philadelphia on Wednesday that he does not expect Painter (elbow) to pitch in games this season.
Analysis: Painter has begun a throwing program after undergoing Tommy John surgery last July. While a late-season return in the minors wasn't ruled out by Dombrowski, he said the plan is to proceed cautiously with the team's top pitching prospect, with eyes on getting him ready for 2025. Painter -- who turns 21 in April -- didn't pitch at all in 2023, so he's looking at two full missed seasons.
Andrew Bellatti
Andrew Bellatti DFA'd by Philly
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 12:13 PM
Bellati was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Tuesday.
Analysis: Bellati made 27 appearances for the Phillies last season and was unimpressive with a 5.11 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 25:12 K:BB over 24.2 innings. The right-hander has no remaining minor-league options, so Philadelphia opted to removed him from the 40-man roster to clear space for trade-acquisition Michael Rucker.
Michael Rucker
Michael Rucker Shipped to Philadelphia
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 12:03 PM
The Phillies acquired Rucker from the Cubs on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations.
Analysis: Rucker had been designated for assignment and has now landed in a new organization. The 29-year-old reliever has collected a 4.96 ERA and 120:50 K:BB over 123.1 innings out of the Cubs' bullpen covering the last three seasons. He'll compete for a middle-relief gig.
Diego Castillo
Diego Castillo Claimed by Philadelphia
Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 3:36 PM
The Phillies claimed Castillo off waivers from the Yankees on Monday.
Analysis: Castillo has now been in four organizations this offseason as he continues to bounce around via waivers. The utility player hasn't found his footing at the major-league level to this point but slashed .313/.431/.410 in 556 plate appearances with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno last season. He'll compete for a reserve role in Philadelphia.
Kolby Allard
Kolby Allard Inks one-year deal with Phillies
Tue, Jan 23, 2024, 2:39 PM
Allard signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Phillies on Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Allard, 26, didn't pitch after mid-July last season because of left shoulder nerve inflammation, although he presumably was given a clean bill of health prior to inking his deal with Philadelphia. The left-hander has posted a career 6.10 ERA over 69 appearances (38 starts) at the major-league level, accumulating a 204:84 K:BB across 245 innings. He does have an option remaining, so Allard could begin 2024 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Edmundo Sosa
Edmundo Sosa Settles at $1.7 million
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 2:01 PM
Sosa signed a one-year, $1.7 million contract with the Phillies on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Sosa hit .251 and managed a .720 OPS with 30 RBI through 299 plate appearances in 2023. While last season ended up being one of Sosa's best at the plate, his role remains limited due to the presence of Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm and Trea Turner in Philadelphia's infield.
Jeff Hoffman
Jeff Hoffman Gets raise from Phillies
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 12:57 PM
The Phillies and Hoffman avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.2 million contract Thursday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It was the final year of arbitration eligibility for Hoffman, who is coming off his best season in the majors after collecting a 2.41 ERA and 69:19 K:BB over 52.1 innings. He'll be a high-leverage option out of the Phillies' bullpen again in 2024.
Ranger Suarez
Ranger Suarez Settles at $5.05 million
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 12:51 PM
The Phillies and Suarez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.05 million contract Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Suarez gets a raise in what was his second year of arbitration eligibility. The left-hander posted a 4.18 ERA and 119:48 K:BB across 125 innings covering 22 starts for Philadelphia in 2023. He'll be relied upon heavily by Philly again in 2024
